A city court has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for raping an 80-year-old granny.
Jacob Omondi Onyango was found guilty of raping the woman on February
7, 2013 at Kasarani. He was also found guilty of touching her privates with his
‘dudu’ without her consent. He allegedly
approached the old woman and offered to carry her loads but he was turned
down. The court was told that Onyango then grabbed the basket from
the woman. He reportedly punched the old woman and dragged her to a thicket
where it is alleged he raped her.
The accused then threatened his victim with a knife and demanded her
phone and money. The old woman narrated to the court how she was saved by a
passers-by after she raised the alarm. The accused attempted to escape but was
caught and then handed to the police.
A clinical officer confirmed that the complainant had bruises on the
neck and had suffered a genital tear as there were visible remains of hymeneal
tissue. In his defence, Onyango told the court that on the material morning, he
was heading to work when he heard a woman crying for help, but his attempt to
help turned tragic when two men claimed he was the one who raped the
granny. He pleaded with the court for leniency because he was his
family’s sole breadwinner.
