TWENTY government teachers at Thomas Fisher Secondary School in Sultan Hamud, Makueni county(shown above), have fled their school after two colleagues escaped an attack by students in June.
School head teacher Paul Ameso is nurturing a broken hand inflicted by his students on June 12, while the school’s head of discipline Maragua Nyagah is also nursing severe head injuries and a broken shoulder blade.
This followed rumours that some of the suspended students could invade the school.
The school was closed from June 12 to 14 when the Board of Management allowed some students to resume classes.
Area district education officer Benjamin Sigei yesterday said the school was closed by BOM after a group of students, mainly from form four, simultaneously attacked their teachers using hockey sticks on June 11 and 12.
The head of discipline in the school was attacked on the June 11 at night and his car damaged by the students who also allegedly stole money.
Sigei said the following day students cornered the same teacher as he came out of his class in the morning.
Sigei said Nyagah was attacked by students using hockey sticks and when the head teacher went for his rescue, he was also injured.
The two teachers were taken to hospital unconscious.
“The right of the teachers has been abused here. I want all the implicated students to face the law for their action. We will not allow politics to interfere with the smooth running of schools,” Sigei said.
He said teachers fear for their lives and have the right to keep away from school.
